What Are Millipedes

Arthropods that have a characteristic two pair of jointed legs on most of their entire body.  Each of their double legged segments is a result of two single segments fused together.

They are different from centipedes because centipedes have only one leg per body segments.  Millipedes can come in a variety of colors. Centipedes are carnivores, while millipedes prefer to eat decomposing plants.

Are Millipedes good or bad?

Millipedes would not be considered bad, as they have a purpose and digest organic matter and fungi, but no one wants to find thousands in their homes.  The female can produce up to 100 eggs, so the population can reach miserable numbers rather quickly.

Do Millipedes Bite You?

Millipedes will not bite you, but you should not pick them up as they do have a defensive secretion that can cause chemicals burns on your skin.  Although, it will not have a long term effect, it can cause some extreme discomfort, discoloration, itching, and blisters on the skim. So do not pick them up, best to scoop up with broom and dispose of them.

What Do Millipedes Eat?

They will eat a variety of items, for the most part millipedes will eat dead plant matter, fungi, and insects.  Usually they will search for food during the night and will prefer to start in the dark places of your home or yard.

Why Am I Finding 100’s of Millipedes in My Home?

Pretty simple creatures, they are looking for food, shelter and moisture.  So having excessively decomposing organic matter around your home could be the perfect shelter and reproductive areas.  Why are millipedes so bad this season? Some customers have never even seen a millipede before this year.  The reason could have a lot to do with our wet spring and excessive organic matter, that provides a great breeding ground for millipedes.
