What Are Millipedes

Arthropods that have a characteristic two pair of jointed legs on most of their entire body.  Each of their double legged segments is a result of two single segments fused together.

They are different from centipedes because centipedes have only one leg per body segments.  Millipedes can come in a variety of colors. Centipedes are carnivores, while millipedes prefer to eat decomposing plants.

How do you get rid of millipedes in your home?

You will want to remove moisture from the foundation or crawl spaces, make sure you are using gutters and your down spots are not clogged causing excessive moisture in a particular area.  

Repair leaky faucets, water pipes and excessive moisture from your air conditioners.

Do Millipedes Bite You?

Millipedes will not bite you, but you should not pick them up as they do have a defensive secretion that can cause chemicals burns on your skin.  Although, it will not have a long term effect, it can cause some extreme discomfort, discoloration, itching, and blisters on the skim. So do not pick them up, best to scoop up with broom and dispose of them.

What Do Millipedes Eat?

They will eat a variety of items, for the most part millipedes will eat dead plant matter, fungi, and insects.  Usually they will search for food during the night and will prefer to start in the dark places of your home or yard.
