What Causes Pantry Pests in Kingwood, TX?

Some pests are known for thriving in your pantry. One of the most prominent and hated stored food pests is the Pantry moth, or Indian meal moth. Pantry moths are about 1/2″ long, with grey and brown wings, and their larvae (maggots) LOVE to burrow in and feed on your grains, cereals, rice, oatmeal, seeds, nuts, and even pet food.

The larvae spin a sticky web as they burrow around in your food, getting ready to cocoon up for their pupal stage, before emerging as adult moths.

Cigarette beetles and Drugstore beetles are other pests you might find in your stored food. And that you want to get rid of!

How to Prevent Pantry Pest Infestations

How do you keep pantry pests out of your kitchen and pantry? There are some preventive things you can do to keep them out.

  • Double check your food items before buying them. Check for unsealed openings or holes in the packaging. Closely check unpackaged foods for small pest eggs or wormy larvae.

  • When you get home with your groceries, store them carefully, realizing that pantry pests can eat through cardboard and other packaging.. Store dried food (flour, sugar, oats, nuts, etc.) in tightly sealed glass containers. Keep your food storage shelves, walls, etc. wiped down thoroughly with hot, soapy vinegar water frequently.

  • Seal up all potential entry points into your home, to help keep insects and other pests out. Make sure your screens are in good repair, as well as door sweeps and weatherproofing. Caulk or spackle up holes/gaps in your walls outside and screen off vents and utility/pipe entry points.
