Roach Exterminators: Why are Cockroaches so attracted to our City?

Cockroaches have been around for millions of years and actually existed long before us human beings. While dinosaurs went extinct, cockroaches still stuck around and adapted because surviving is what they do.

Cockroaches can live and survive in a variety of different environments and climates but they mostly prefer areas of the country where the climate is hot and humid. Urban environments are also another point of appeal for cockroaches because where there are a lot of humans, there’s a lot of food sources for them to enjoy.

That makes Houston a perfect match for roaches to hang around and dwell, but a terrible match for homeowners who’d rather not have to deal with these icky critters.

If you live in Houston, chances are that you’re going to run into cockroaches no matter where you live and how well you keep things clean just because of how cockroaches behave, the way they multiply and how much they like to explore and hunt for food.

They can easily slip into the tiniest of cracks and crevices and soon a few cockroaches can become a full blown infestation that is hard to control.

There are over 4500 species of cockroach found around the world, but only a tiny number of them like to live near humans.

Most prefer to live out in the wild. While that may be relieving to hear, the ones that do like to stay close to us (like the German cockroach and American cockroach to name a few) can become a major problem in very little time because of their tendencies and how quickly they reproduce.

They say, “knowledge is power” and that is also the case when it comes to dealing with a cockroach infestation.

We like to inform our customers about the cockroach before they hire us to conduct a cockroach inspection and treatment because the more you know about the cockroach, the easier they become to control. Read More Bed Bugs Kingwood Texas

Cockroach Background Info

Cockroaches are distinct insects that have six legs and two antennae. Some species even have wings. The cockroaches who do have wings can actually fly which can be a freaky sight to see. Out of all the thousands of cockroach species, approximately 30 to 35 are regarded as a pest problem for humans.

No matter the type of cockroach you encounter, they share these common habits: they love to eat and are on a constant never ending search for food. Cockroaches need food and water to survive and we humans have plenty of that in our homes, so it makes total sense that they’d target our homes to satisfy their appetite.

The Most Common Roaches Found In Houston

As we mentioned, there are many different types of roaches in the world but only a small number hang around cities and places where humans reside. We’ve narrowed down the most common species below. These species have shown to be a major problem in Houston because of how quickly they can infest a home, spread disease and cause trouble.

Roach

German Cockroach

Without a doubt, the German cockroach is the most common of all cockroaches found in Houston homes and the cockroach species our cockroach specialists encounter the most. The German cockroach is also one of the smallest of roaches reaching only about ½ an inch long. They are light brown colored and have two dark stripes down their back.

German cockroaches like warm, secluded areas that are humid and where they are close to a food or water source so it makes sense that they are most often found in the kitchen or bathroom. They also love to be wherever there is warmth and will be found sticking close to electrical equipment and power supplies of electronics.

German cockroaches are most active at night time where they do most of their foraging and consumption and sleep much of the day. If you happen to notice a cockroach in the day time, this should be a worrisome sign because them scurrying around in the day is an indicator of a large infestation present.

American Cockroach

Even though “American” is in its name, the American cockroach is one of the more hated cockroaches by people because of it’s creepy look and large size (2.1 inches long). The American cockroach is brown to reddish brown and has wings which it uses to fly and glide around.

American cockroaches are another heavily common issue in Houston because of their preference for the heat and humidity. American cockroaches are actually originally from Africa and have now for centuries become well established in the states and particularly in Houston, likely due to the city’s climate reminding them of their native land.

American cockroaches are common in the sewer systems and will enter homes from the plumbing or from outside. They actually prefer to live outdoors but will go indoors to be close to food sources or to seek warmth when the weather has gotten colder.

Roach

Brown-banded cockroach

The Brown-banded cockroach is also a smaller sized cockroach, reaching about ½ inch long and is brown with two light colored brown bands across its wings and body. Unlike the German cockroach, the brown-banded roach doesn’t require as much moisture for its comfort. When indoors, they are normally found on high places where it is dry and dark or in high-rise buildings.

Brown-banded cockroaches are frequently found in furniture and are more commonly found in homes than in commercial buildings. They are also known for spreading a known allergen which can trigger breathing problems for those with asthma.

Oriental Cockroach

Oriental cockroaches are 1.25 inches in length and colored either dark brown or black with lighter colored legs that have black markings. Having originated in the Middle East and North Africa, oriental cockroaches have loved the city of Houston, thanks to our high humidity. Oriental cockroaches are different from other roach species because they can’t climb vertical surfaces so they usually stay low to the ground.

When found in homes, they are usually discovered under sinks and refrigerators. Most of the time oriental cockroaches stay outdoors and only decide to move indoors when temperatures drop and they need a warm place to stay.

Other common roaches found in our area are Asian cockroaches, common home invaders that can be controlled by good exterior pest control, usually with maintenance services.

Performing a Cockroach Inspection

A successful cockroach fullscope pest control program begins with a thorough cockroach home inspection. Our specialists know very well the tendencies of cockroaches and perform very detailed inspections when searching for where the roaches are hiding and where they are the most active.

As noted earlier, cockroaches hang around indoors where there is moisture, cover and food and water sources nearby so often our technicians first inspect the bathroom and the kitchen thoroughly.

Other than looking for live roaches themselves, our skilled technicians also check for evidence of cockroach activity by scanning for roach feces and roach eggs.

What To Do Before Roach Treatment and To Prevent Future Roach Invasions

Before hiring us to conduct a cockroach treatment, it is very important to first make sure you do a detailed thorough cleaning and sanitation of your home or else the treatment will not be as effective. This preliminary sanitation is essentially done to get rid of all food and water sources that the roaches enjoy. Here are a few things you can do:

  • Polygon 5

Clean your kitchen floor and appliances

Cockroaches can live off of the smallest amount of grease and crumbs they can find which are usually around kitchen appliances. Clean appliances well especially under and behind the stove, fridge, microwave, toaster, dishwasher and any other appliance you use on a regular basis.

  • Polygon 5

Keep your kitchen and bathrooms dry

Roaches also need water to survive. When cleaning, dry off counters, sink areas, bath tubs and other areas where water can gather. If you have a plumbing leak, fix them immediately.

  • Polygon 5

    mpty out your cabinets.

Clean out your kitchen cabinets and vacuum up crumbs and spills.

  • Polygon 5

    Toss out garbage

and reduce excess clutter as much as possible.

  • Polygon 5

Use a caulking gun to seal off cracks and crevices.

These are prime ways that roaches travel to and fro and need to be sealed up to take away hiding spots and entry points.

How We Exterminate Cockroaches

When a homeowner encounters roaches, they usually first try to take matters into their own hands and will buy a roach control spray from their supermarket or grocery store, spray around and hope for the best. When they find out this doesn’t work, they should turn to a pro that knows what works and what doesn’t.

Roaches are smarter than they look and they can actually develop a resistance to chemicals or are smart enough to avoid where you’ve treated an area and continue their food scavenging without a problem.

Our pest control technicians are skilled to know what works best and use the best product the industry has to offer when it comes to roach control. Whether an infestation is big or small, we use the absolutely best professional products that will make the most impact and wipe out the entire cockroach population.

Here’s some of the treatment options of specialists use to tackle a home cockroach problem in Houston.

Cockroach baits are the go-to method of controlling an indoor cockroach infestation. Cockroach baits contain attractants that cockroaches enjoy which will make them unable to resist checking out the bait. Also, baits are an actual food source, with the only addition being a slow-killing lethal poison.

Since you eliminated all their food sources through your preliminary clean up, they won’t have anything available to them other then that bait that is laid out. We deposit little dots of bait in areas where there is the most roach activity which is indicated by where they’ve left their feces and egg capsules.

To really do damage to the cockroach population, you have to target the undeveloped cockroaches: the eggs and nymphs. We do this with Insect Growth Regulators which serve as a form of birth control that stops all the roach eggs from hatching out the next generation of cockroaches.

These are insecticides that you won’t find at the pest control aisle of your local grocery store. The professional insecticide concentrates are used as a flushing out agent to kill roaches that are in hiding and carry a residual so it will keep killing roaches that come in contact with the product long after they are applied.

Also, we treat homes with insecticides as a protective barrier to keep future roaches away. This is something we recommend doing quarterly to keep your home roach-free all year long.
