Plants That Keep Mosquitoes Away

FullScope-Pest-Control-1-1

That noise a mosquito makes in your ear can be quite annoying, especially because it makes getting a refreshing moment of rest almost impossible. Sad, right? There is a good chance you have already tried remedies such as insect repellent devices and lighting citronella candles and still didn’t get good enough results. Now, you are left wondering if there are more natural and effective ways to get rid of these menacing creatures.

It is possible you didn’t know that there are plants that can be used to eliminate or keep mosquitoes away. Some of these plants are naturally repulsive to mosquitoes and insects, hence contributing to a pest-free backyard.

At this point, it is quite likely you are asking questions such as:

What plants keep mosquitoes away?

Where should they be planted or placed for the best results?

Examples of Plants That Keep Mosquitoes Away

While no can be considered an everlasting pest panacea, the plants briefly discussed in this article all contain mosquito repellent properties to certain degrees. With that said, if you are looking to keep mosquitoes away from your property, consider planting any of the following plants:

Basil

Fresh and fragrant basil can be used to repel mosquitoes. Mosquitoes don’t like being around basil, so you can take advantage of this by creating a barrier with basil around any stagnant water in your property to discourage mosquitoes from breeding. Basil grows well in full sun, well-drained soil, and a large pot that allows airflow between plants.

Catnip

Cats are attracted to nepetalactone, a naturally occurring chemical in catnip. It is this same cat-alluring chemical that deters mosquitoes, making it one of the most effective plants for dealing with mosquitoes. It is important to note that using catnip might not be such a great idea if you have cats. Catnip can grow under partial shade or full sun and thrives a lot better with well-drained soil. If you don’t want it to grow freely in your yard, simply plant it in a pot.

Citronella

Citronella is a common ingredient in mosquito-repellent candles. The plant produces a strong scent that overwhelms other mosquito attractants in the surroundings. To ensure that this plant thrives well, plant or place in partial shade or full sun.

Bee Balm

Bee balm is alternatively known as wild bergamot. This plant offers the double benefit of keeping mosquitoes away and attracting desirable pollinators like butterflies and bees. Plant in well-drained soil and under full sun.

Lavender

Although soothing, the scent of fresh lavender can deter mosquitoes. You can plant this plant in a large pot or let flourish freely in your garden – if you have enough space. Be sure to place lavender in full sunlight.

Lemongrass

Lemongrass contains citral, a natural oil that is used in many mosquito repellents; it serves well as an organic deterrent. Leave this plant in full sun and plant in a large pot that allows drainage.

Lemon Balm

This plant is used for decoration by many. It can also be utilized in the fight against mosquitoes. Place this plant around your patio to keep mosquitoes off. It is best to keep this plant potted as it can overrun your garden if planted and allowed to grow freely. Place in full sun.

Marigold

Rich in fragrance and pleasant in color, marigolds are excellent for edging a garden and repelling mosquitoes. These flowering plants contain pyrethrum, a compound which is used in insect repellents. Plant in well-drained soil and full sun.

Peppermint

Rich and crisp in scent, peppermint is another natural mosquito repellent. Like other plants in the mint family, this plant can overrun a garden if allowed to grow freely. Place in a planter in the full sun with moist soil.
